For all her 1,000 years of history Debrecen looks vigorous and young to the visitor due to the large number of schools and universities in the city. The most famous of them is the old Reformed College. No other place in the city could give you a more authentic look into the distant past of Debrecen than the College with its permanent exhibition of local artefacts and findings and its magnificent library. Apart from Debrecens high standards of education and historical role the region is renowned for the puszta of Hortobágy with its exceptional natural beauty and wild life, the csárda (local inn), the special breeds of horses and its numberless thermal baths (centred in Hajdúszoboszló). The secret of success lies with information: the more people hear from us the more it is likely that large number of tourists visit this region and people see it as a place for profitable investments. The words puszta, goulash and csárda are images of an ancient culture which could be kept alive and revived in our modern age as tinges of folklore tradition surviving in the vicinity of cities rushing towards the third millennium. The past centuries often saw the city in bloodshed and turmoil. Yet, the city grew larger and larger every decade - with prudent politics under the Turkish rule and the ability to assimilate new tendencies later. This could not have happened without the lively spiritual and cultural life of the city. Twice the capital of Hungary Debrecen entered the modern era as the heart of Eastern-Hungary, the flower of the puszta with unique folk tradition all around the region. Year by year Debrecen is receiving more and more colour, new investments of infrastructure are taking place to help the city join the heart-beat of the rest of Europe. New restaurants, motels, travel agencies sprang up in the past few years. Telephone lines are no longer hard to get and there is a hope that the city will have an international airport, soon. The universities attract a good number of foreign students and they spread the news about the city's cultural, economic and traditional events (Flower Festival, Equestrian Days, Bridge Fair) all around the world. The city's connections outside Hungary are also important. All these later developments may help the city and the area to become a favourite tourist destination and an integral part of Europe. |
